Data Proposersĭata Proposers intend to submit a proposal for NASA funding, with the proposal including the intent to archive data in the PDS. Some information in this collection may also be of interest to the general public. They intend to locate data products, find tools to work with those data products, and understand how those data products are formatted and structured. Data Users (Researchers, Educators, Students and the General Public)ĭata Users include researchers, students, and educators who are interested in obtaining, manipulating, and understanding PDS data products.

When needed, PDS provides users access to staff to help with data selection. All products are peer-reviewed, well-documented, and easily accessible via a system of online catalogs that are organized by planetary disciplines.Īrchived products are available on-line. But it is more than just a facility - the archive is actively managed by planetary scientists to help ensure its usefulness and usability by the world wide planetary science community.Īrchive submissions are prepared by researchers under the guidance of PDS personnel. The Planetary Data System (PDS) is a long-term archive of digital data products returned from NASA's planetary missions, and from other kinds of flight and ground-based data acquisitions, including laboratory experiments. Position details and nomination package requirements are described here. McClanahan due date for applications is OctoCOB EST. The position will be a temporary assignment, not to exceed three years, ending (at the latest) in fall 2024.Ĭandidates wishing to apply for this position should send their nomination package to Dr. This virtual position will be served mostly remotely, will be part time and funded at approximately 0.2 FTE, depending on the details of funding arrangements. The Chief Scientist will report to the PDS Program Scientist at NASA HQ. The selected Chief Scientist will have a strong background in planetary science and serve as the liaison between the PDE and NASA’s Planetary Data System (PDS). The Planetary Data Ecosystem defines the broad community of planetary scientists, engineers, mission specialists, data providers, data users and planetary science educators who have interests in planetary missions and their data. NASA’s Planetary Science Division is seeking a highly experienced planetary science expert to serve as its Chief Scientist to represent the Planetary Data Ecosystem (PDE).
